Football Casual : It started in the North?
Northern football casuals, the originals? The age old debate rages on. What region of England does the terrace casual movement owe its beginnings to? It'll probably never be proven and definitely never agreed on. And whilst our Southern counterparts were perhaps the first to be noticed and marked with the medias Casuals moniker, fellow Northerners who were there from the get go claim it all started back in '79.... up North of course! Regardless of the scene's beginnings, one thing that was guaranteed from region to region and certainly in the the pre-internet years, was the difference in styles and trends. Casuals we'rent just...
We are the Working-class. Urban Grafters 1.
We are the working-class,With a dirty but glorious past.Skins and mods and ox-blood docs,Button-down shirts and fresh terrace togs,Behind the walls of crumbling factories and mills,wide-eyed ravers pop pills.Inspiration comes straight from the streets,From our music and style to the kicks on our feet,White Talcum powder on polished wood floors,Northern Soul nighters behind these closed doors.Zoot suits on scoots and braces and boots,Weekends for the football,He dribbles! Spike Island: Where angels play.
Last week was the 29th anniversary of the ‘gig of our generation’, The Stone Roses at Spike Island. I’d won nearly £500 on the horses so I bought two tickets, one for me and one for my mate Chris, and spent £50 on a pair of Joe Bloggs flares. I decided the easiest way to get the coach so went to the bus station and booked two tickets. We decided to go up the night before, we had no idea where we’d stay though. I vaguely remember Chris saying don’t worry, we’ll find somewhere. Saturday 26th came and off we...

Acid house, soccer casuals and underground dance music. Just what the Proctor ordered! We recently had the great pleasure to speak to and interview mega talented Scottish writer and novelist Johnny Proctor. In this article we delve deep to find out about some of his influences, what inspires him and how he got into writing books. And not to mention a sneaky peek at his latest offering in the Zico book trilogy, Ninety Six. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ What was it that inspired you to make a start on a novel? Initially I hadn’t planned to write a novel. It wasn’t something that had ever...
SUBBACULTURE - MAYBE IT ALL STARTS WITH REDUNDANCY
We recently caught up with our good friend Mark Hynds. Mark is the zine pioneer, creator and founder of what is perhaps the coolest subculture zine on the globe. He let us (and you) in on some of his coming of age influences and the path that led him to create the constantly improving Subbaculture brand. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ In the early eighties they shut down the Midlands car factory my dad worked at. With no options locally he travelled to Newcastle for work. Needs must. Away from our family for the first time he returned the following weekend with a present. A cassette of the...
